The Council on Substance Abuse-NCADD (COSA-NCADD) is partnering with the Alabama Department of Mental Health and the Montgomery Biscuits to host “Strike Out Stigma Night” on Wednesday, May 15 at Biscuit Stadium in Montgomery. The event will offer information and resources on mental illness and substance abuse.

According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults in American experience some type of mental illness. Three out of four people with a mental illness report that they have experienced stigma. When subjected to stigma surrounding mental illness and substance abuse, many people will not seek the assistance they need because they are made to feel ashamed for something that is out of their control.

“It is imperative that we change the narrative on mental illness and substance abuse disorders,” said Beverly Toodle, COSA-NCADD Project Director for Mental Health First Aid Training. “There needs to be more dialogue had and more resources provided to help people to understand that there is help and treatment for these issues.”

COSA-NCADD and other community partners will be on hand to offer information on services and opportunities to help those in need and their families. COSA-NCADD Peer Support Specialist Edana Love will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Gates open at 5:00 PM and game time is 6:30 PM.
