PRESCRIPTION & ALCOHOL MISUSE/ABUSE AMONG THE ELDERLY

About the Training Topic: Senior citizens are one of the most vulnerable age groups in the world. They are highly prone to risks such as falls, fractures, motor vehicle accidents, as well as, neglect and physical abuse. They are also at risk for prescription drug misuse and abuse. Identifying misuse and abuse in senior citizens is critical to ensure the prevention of overdoses or even death. This training will offer participants an in-depth look at the impact of prescription drug misuse and abuse among senior citizens.

Objectives: Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize signs, symptoms and patterns of substance and prescription drug abuse in senior citizens
  • Identify the difference between misuse and abuse
  • Identify medications seniors are most likely to misuse and abuse
  • Define opioids, benzodiazepines and stimulants, and what these medications are generally designed for
  • Explore the impact that prescription drug misuse and abuse has on senior citizens
  • Identify treatment facilities within Alabama

Registration/CE

This training is FREE! However, you must register, as there will only be twenty (20) slots available. A total of one (1) contact hour will be provided. The Council on Substance Abuse-NCADD is an approved CE provider through the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners and National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC).
