Heroin and Prescription Drug Abuse: A Crisis in Alabama

January 31, 2017 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

About the Training Topic: Alabama remains at the forefront of the increasing heroin and prescription drug abuse epidemic. There are areas that have had more of an impact by this epidemic than others; however, as citizens and residents, we are all impacted. Heroin is the number two drug epidemic in Alabama. This can be attributed to the low cost, ease of accessibility and high potency of the drug. In addition to heroin, there’s been a significant increase in prescription drug abuse, overdoses and even death. As we mover forward, we are encouraged to increase our efforts in preventing the early onset of substance use.

Objectives: Upon completion participants will be able to:

1. Identify the origin of heroin and how certain prescription drugs offer similar effects

2.Identify recent trends in heroin and prescription drug abuse

3. Understand how the Alabama Prescription Drug Monitoring Program helps in reducing the prescription drug abuse epidemic

4. Identify efforts to prevent heroin and prescription drug use
