According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of June 2020, 13% of Americans reported starting or increasing substance use as a way of coping with stress or emotions related to COVID-19. As of May 2020, Alabama saw a 20% increase in the number of opioid overdose deaths during a 12-month period. The Council on Substance Abuse (COSA) is relaunching the “Let’s Talk Prevention” Campaign, with the intention of encouraging parents to talk to their teens about the dangers of alcohol and drugs, with the goal of preventing issues that can potentially carry devastating effects into adulthood.
Program Manager Mike Rogers states “Parents talk to their teens about shopping, sports, chores, or entertainers, but why not bring up a topic that can devastate a teen’s life now and as an adult?”
With the campaign re-launching in six counties (Autauga, Elmore, Lowndes, Montgomery, Perry, and Wilcox), COSA will provide campaign activities that create opportunities for parents and their teens to talk directly with staff and access information and materials on topics including: alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, opioids, and mental health.
In addition to working with various community partners, COSA will also host virtual and in-person events throughout the summer. Below are some of the locations where free materials are available as well as upcoming parent education sessions:
